Show a single match for items with variations on the Sales page

We have added a new item "T-Shirts" with variations for size and color. When we type "T-Shirts" on the sales page, we get a long list of different variations for the T-Shirts. This means we need to manually scroll through the long list to find the exact item we need (hundreds of items).
What we want to happen is that we get a single match for the "T-Shirt" item and then get pop-ups or selection screens that allow us to chose the size variation and the color variation.
